I travel for work a lot, and for work trips I always go carry-on only. No waiting at the baggage belt, no lost suitcase, and I can walk straight out of the airport and get to my meeting or hotel.
It took me a few trips to get my packing right. In this post I share my carry-on packing list for work trips, the things I never travel without, and simple tips to fit everything in one small bag.
Why carry-on only for work trips?
Work trips are usually short, between two and five days. You don’t need much, and every minute counts: you often land and go straight to the office or an event. With only a carry-on, you:
- skip the check-in queue and the baggage belt
- never worry about a lost suitcase before an important meeting
- move faster through airports, trains and taxis
- pack smarter, because you only take what you really need
The three things I never travel without for work
Before clothes, before anything else, these three go in my bag:
- My office laptop. Work comes with me, always.
- My office phone. For calls, messages and two-step login.
- My office badge. Without it, getting into the office building can be a real problem.
And one small hero item: a universal travel adapter that works with all socket types. It saves me every single time, whether I’m in the UK, the US or anywhere else.
My carry-on packing list for a work trip
Work essentials
- Laptop and laptop charger
- Office phone and personal phone, with chargers
- Badge
- Universal travel adapter
- Power bank
- Headphones for the flight and calls
- A small notebook and pen
Clothes (for a 3โ4 day trip)
My office style is comfort first, polished when it matters. For work trips I pack pieces that mix and match:
- One or two blazers (I wear the bulkier one on the plane)
- Trousers or smart wide-leg jeans
- Three or four simple tops
- One dress for a dinner or event
- Comfortable flats or clean sneakers, plus one smarter pair if needed
- Sleepwear and underwear
- A light jumper or cardigan for cold offices and planes

Toiletries
My routine is simple, so this bag is small. I don’t wear makeup, so my daily basics are sunscreen and kajal. Everything else is travel-size:
- Sunscreen
- Kajal
- Moisturiser and lip balm
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Mini shampoo and conditioner (or use the hotel ones)
- Any medicines you need
- My signature perfume, which I always carry
Remember that liquids in your carry-on have to follow the airport’s rules, so check them before you pack.
Travel comfort
- Passport and travel documents
- An eye mask for flights and hotel rooms
- A reusable water bottle (empty for security, fill it after)
Packing tips to fit it all in one bag
Wear your bulkiest items
Wear your blazer, your heaviest shoes and your jumper on travel day. That frees up a lot of space.
Roll or fold flat, then use pouches
Small pouches or packing cubes keep everything organised: one for tech, one for toiletries, one for underwear and small items. You find things faster, and your bag doesn’t turn into chaos.
Keep a ready-to-go tech pouch
I keep my adapter, cables and power bank in one pouch that lives in my work bag. When I pack for a trip, it just moves into my carry-on. Nothing forgotten.
Plan outfits by day
Check your calendar before you pack. Which day has the big meeting? Which evening has a dinner? Pack for those moments and skip the “just in case” outfits.
Put the essentials on top
Laptop, liquids and documents should be easy to reach for security checks. You’ll thank yourself in the queue.
What not to pack
- Too many shoes. Two pairs is usually enough.
- Full-size toiletries.
- Outfits you’ve never worn before. A work trip is not the time to discover a shirt creases badly or shoes hurt.
- Too many “maybe” items. If you’re not sure, you probably don’t need it.

Frequently asked questions
What should I pack in a carry-on for a business trip?
Your laptop, phone, badge and chargers, a universal adapter, two or three mix-and-match outfits, one pair of comfortable shoes plus one smarter pair, and travel-size toiletries.
How do I fit a week of work clothes in a carry-on?
Choose a small colour palette so everything matches, wear your bulkiest items on the plane, roll your clothes and use packing cubes. A blazer that works with every outfit helps a lot.
Can I bring my laptop in my carry-on?
Yes, and you should. Keep it easy to reach, because many airports ask you to take it out at security.
What is the most useful item for frequent work travel?
For me, a universal travel adapter. It works with different socket types, so you can charge your laptop and phone anywhere.
