My First Skydive in Dubai: What It Feels Like and Tips for First-Timers

By Swati Bhalla ยท

Sky Dive

In 2024, I jumped out of a plane over Dubai. It was my first skydive, and I still remember exactly how I felt when the parachute opened and I saw The Palm below me: on top of the world.

People always ask me: “Weren’t you scared?” “What does it actually feel like?” “Would you do it again?” In this post I share what my first skydive felt like, what happens on the day, and tips if you’re thinking about doing your first jump.

I’m not a skydiving instructor. This is my personal experience. Always follow your operator’s instructions and safety rules.

Why I decided to skydive

Skydiving was one of those things I always thought “maybe one day”. Dubai felt like the perfect place to finally do it: the view over The Palm and the coastline is one of the most famous skydiving views in the world.

I also love doing things that scare me a little. Every time I do something I wasn’t sure I could do, I come back a bit more confident. Moving to a new country taught me that, and skydiving was a fun way to prove it to myself again.

What does skydiving feel like?

Honestly? It’s one of the most satisfying feelings in the world.

Before the jump

The nerves are real. Watching other people get ready, putting on the gear, listening to the instructions: that’s when your heart starts racing. The waiting is probably the hardest part.

The moment you jump

It all happens very fast. There’s no time to overthink. One moment you’re at the door, the next you’re in the air. Most people say the free fall doesn’t feel like falling the way you imagine. It feels more like flying, with very strong wind in your face.

When the parachute opens

This was my favourite part. Suddenly it’s quiet and calm, and you’re floating. You can look around and take in the view. Seeing The Palm from up there, I felt free and so proud of myself. Top of the world, really.

After landing

Pure happiness and adrenaline. I couldn’t stop smiling. That feeling stayed with me for days.

What happens on the day of a first skydive?

Every operator is different, but a first jump usually looks like this:

  1. Check-in and paperwork. You fill in forms, and your weight and health details are checked against the operator’s rules.
  2. Briefing. For a first-timer, this is usually a tandem jump, which means you’re attached to an experienced instructor who does the technical work. They explain your body position and what to expect.
  3. Getting the gear on. Jumpsuit, harness, goggles.
  4. The plane ride up. This is when the views and the nerves both start.
  5. The jump, free fall and parachute ride.
  6. Landing, and usually a lot of smiling and hugging.

If you book photos or a video, a camera person may jump with you. Totally worth it: you won’t remember every second, and it’s a memory you’ll want to watch again.

Tips for your first skydive

Choose a licensed, well-reviewed operator

This is the most important thing. Safety comes first. Look for an established operator with good reviews and clear safety information.

Check the requirements before you book

Operators have rules about age, weight and health conditions. Read them carefully on the official website, and be honest on the forms.

Book in advance, but keep some flexibility

Jumps depend on the weather and can be moved if the wind or clouds aren’t right. Don’t book it on your last day of the trip if you can avoid it.

Eat something light

Don’t go on an empty stomach, but don’t eat a huge meal either.

Wear comfortable clothes and proper shoes

Comfortable clothes and secure shoes like sneakers. Tie your hair back.

Breathe and listen to your instructor

When the nerves kick in, slow deep breaths help. Then trust the instructions. They do this every day.

I’m so glad I have mine. It’s one of my favourite memories, and I still love watching it.

Is skydiving worth it?

For me, absolutely. It’s not just an adrenaline rush. It’s a reminder that you can do scary things and come out happier on the other side. If it’s on your bucket list, I really recommend it.
