4 Days in Sydney: My Easy Itinerary (Plus My Favourite Melbourne Moments)

By Swati Bhalla ยท

Every December, my husband and I take one big holiday together. It is the trip we plan all year for. In December 2025 our route was India, then Australia, then New Zealand. And around that same time, we had just signed the papers for our new home in the Netherlands. So this trip felt extra special to me. New home, new year, new countries ๐Ÿ˜Š

Australia was a dream for me for a very long time, and I will tell you why a bit later (it involves a Bollywood movie and a pink dress). In this post I am sharing my simple 4 days in Sydney itinerary, exactly how we did it, plus my favourite moments from Melbourne.

I also travel while working a full-time corporate job in Europe. So I know how it feels when you only have a few days and you want to see as much as possible without feeling rushed. This is an easy plan, not a crazy packed one. I hope it helps you plan your own trip.

My 4 days in Sydney itinerary at a glance

Here is the quick version before I go day by day.

DayWhat we did
Day 1Sunset cruise past the Sydney Opera House
Day 2Feeding kangaroos and meeting a very sleepy koala
Day 3Walking around the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge
Day 4Airport and flying on to our next stop

As you can see, it is not a long list. I like to keep one main thing for each day. That way you have time to slow down, take photos, sit for a coffee and just enjoy being somewhere new.

4 days in Sydney

See how my 4 days in Sydney looked, from the sunset cruise to the sleepy koala.

Day 1: A sunset cruise past the Opera House

We started our Sydney trip on the water, and honestly, I think this is the best way to begin. A sunset cruise gives you that first big “wow, I am really here” moment. Seeing the Sydney Opera House from the harbour as the sky changes colour is such a beautiful sight.

If you go, here are a few simple tips:

  • Book your cruise for your first or second evening. It is a gentle activity, so it works well even if you are still a bit tired from the flight.
  • Pick a sunset time slot. The light on the harbour at that hour is just beautiful for photos and videos.
  • Bring a light layer. It can feel cooler on the water in the evening than on land.
  • Keep your phone charged. You will want to film a lot, trust me.

There are many different cruise companies in Sydney Harbour, from small boats to bigger ones. Compare a few, read what is included, and choose the one that fits your style.

Day 2: Feeding kangaroos and meeting a sleepy koala

Day 2 was all about Australian animals. We went to a wildlife park where we could feed kangaroos, and we also met a koala. And this koala was very, very sleepy ๐Ÿ˜„ It was the cutest thing.

If you have never fed a kangaroo before, it is such a fun thing to add to your Sydney plan.

If you want to do this too, a few things to keep in mind:

  • There are several wildlife parks around Sydney. Some are in the city and some are a drive away, so plan your day around the travel time.
  • Check the official website of the park you choose to see what animal experiences they offer and how to book.
  • Go earlier in the day if you can, so you are not rushing.
  • Koalas sleep a lot, so do not be surprised if yours is napping too. That is just part of the charm.
  • Always follow the staff instructions around the animals.

Honestly, a sleepy koala is the cutest way to spend a day in Australia.

Day 3: Walking around the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge

On Day 3 we kept it simple and explored on foot. We walked around the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. On Day 1 we saw them from the water, and now we saw them up close. Both views are so different and both are worth it.

The Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in the world, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Harbour Bridge is just as iconic, and seeing the two together on the same walk is such a classic Sydney moment.

My tips for a walking day like this:

  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk more than you think.
  • Carry water and sunscreen, especially if you visit in the summer months like we did in December.
  • Take your time with photos. Walk a little further away from the Opera House to get the full building and the bridge in one frame.
  • Leave space in your plan to just sit by the water. Some of the best travel moments are the quiet ones.

If you want to go inside the Opera House or do a tour, check the official Sydney Opera House website for the latest options.

Day 4: Airport day and flying on

Day 4 was our travel day. We went to the airport and flew on to the next part of our trip. I always count the travel day as part of the itinerary, because it really does take up most of the day.

My advice for your last day:

  • Pack the night before so the morning feels calm.
  • Leave enough time to get to the airport. Check the latest airport and transport information before you go.
  • If your flight is later in the day, you can fit in a short walk or a coffee near your hotel.

For packing, I keep things light and simple on every trip. If you want my list, I shared it in my carry-on packing list for work trips. It works just as well for holidays.

My favourite Melbourne moments

Now, Melbourne. I have to be honest, I loved Melbourne a lot! I even asked my followers which city they liked more, Sydney or Melbourne, because both of them were so special to me in their own way. Some of my favourite moments were actually day trips from the city, to Phillip Island and to the Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road. Here are the moments I keep thinking about.

Seeing the little penguins

We saw the little penguins on Phillip Island, which is an easy day trip from Melbourne (about a two-hour drive). It was such a sweet experience. They are tiny and so adorable. The little penguin is actually the smallest penguin species in the world, which makes seeing them even more special. If you want to see them, look for official wildlife viewing experiences, and always follow the rules so the penguins stay safe and undisturbed.

Visiting the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

We also visited the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which everyone calls the MCG. It is one of the most famous sports stadiums in the world, and if you love cricket, it is a must. If you want to visit, check the official MCG website for tours and events.

Dancing to my Salaam Namaste song in a pink dress

And now the story I promised you. Back in 2005, I watched the Bollywood movie Salaam Namaste. The film is set in Melbourne, and after watching it, I dreamed about going to Australia one day.

Twenty years later, in 2025, I was finally there. On a day trip along the Great Ocean Road, at the Twelve Apostles, I put on a pink dress and danced to my favourite song from the movie. A little dream from years ago, finally lived ๐Ÿ’—

Tips for planning your own Australia trip with a full-time job

I travel with a full-time corporate job in Europe, and I want you to know that seeing the world is possible with a bit of planning. Here is what works for me:

  • Plan one big trip a year. For us, that is December. Knowing it is coming keeps me excited all year.
  • Combine countries if you can. Australia is far from Europe, so we combined it with India and New Zealand in one trip.
  • Keep the plan simple. One main activity a day is enough. You will enjoy it more.
  • Book the important things early. Flights and the experiences you really care about.
  • Check official websites for opening times, tickets and visa rules, because these things change.

I wrote more about this in my post on how to travel with a full-time job, if you want more ideas.

Plan details like tickets, opening times and visa rules change, so always check the official websites before you go.
