Montreux, Gruyères and Geneva: A Relaxed 3-Day Lake Geneva Trip

By Swati Bhalla ·

Swati and her husband on a Lake Geneva boat and by the lake in Montreux

In July 2023, my husband and I spent a few summer days around Lake Geneva in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. We spent most of our time around Montreux and also visited Gruyères and Geneva.

If I had to pick one favourite moment, it would be easy: the chocolate factory. But the lake sunsets come a very close second.

In this post I share what we did, my tips for each place, and how to plan a relaxed Montreux, Gruyères and Geneva trip.

Why the Lake Geneva region is special

Most people picture Switzerland as snowy mountains. The Lake Geneva region (Lac Léman) feels different. It’s softer, warmer, almost Mediterranean in summer. Vineyards on the hills, palm trees along the promenade, and the Alps on the other side of the lake.

It’s also very easy to combine places here. Montreux, Gruyères and Geneva are all reachable by train, so you can stay in one place and do day trips.

Montreux: lake, promenade and sunsets

Montreux is a small, elegant town on the lake. It’s perfect for slow days.

A boat on the lake

One of our best afternoons was on a lake boat. Blue water, mountains all around, the breeze, and the two of us just enjoying it. Taking a boat is one of the best ways to see the lake and the towns along it.

The lakeside promenade

The promenade along the water is beautiful for a walk, with flowers, benches and views across to the mountains. Montreux is also famous for its jazz festival in summer and the Freddie Mercury statue on the promenade.

Sunset by the lake

The evenings were magical. We stayed by the water and watched the sun go down behind the hills. The sky turned orange, the lake turned gold. Simple and unforgettable.

The chocolate factory (my favourite)

Visiting a Swiss chocolate factory was my favourite part of the whole trip. You learn how Swiss chocolate is made, smell it everywhere, and of course, taste a lot of it.

If you’re in this region, the best-known one is Maison Cailler in Broc, just a few minutes from Gruyères. Check opening times and book ahead in summer, as it gets busy.

Gruyères: cheese and a castle

Gruyères is a tiny medieval village on a hill, famous for Gruyère cheese. It’s like stepping into a storybook: cobbled street, old houses, a castle at the top and green hills all around.

If you love cheese, La Maison du Gruyère at the bottom of the village shows how Gruyère cheese is made. Pair it with a fondue lunch in the village and you’ve had a very Swiss day.

Geneva: a quick city stop

Geneva is a big international city at the end of the lake. We spent time there as part of our trip, and it’s a nice contrast to the small towns.

Things to see in Geneva:

  • The Jet d’Eau. The famous giant water fountain on the lake.
  • The lakeside. Great for a walk and people-watching.
  • The old town. Narrow streets and a calm, historic feel.

If you only have a few days, I’d spend most of your time in Montreux and Gruyères, and keep Geneva for your arrival or departure day.

Suggested plan: 3 days around Lake Geneva

Day 1 – Montreux: Walk the promenade, take a lake boat in the afternoon, watch the sunset by the water.

Day 2 – Gruyères and a chocolate factory: Visit the chocolate factory in the morning, walk up to Gruyères village, have cheese or fondue for lunch.

Day 3 – Geneva: See the Jet d’Eau and the lakeside, then fly or take the train home.

Tips for visiting Montreux and Gruyères

  1. Go in summer for the lake. July was warm, sunny and perfect for boats and evenings outside.
  2. Use the trains. Switzerland’s public transport is excellent. Plan on the SBB app.
  3. Book the chocolate factory ahead. Summer slots can sell out.
  4. Pack something light and something warm. Days are warm, evenings by the lake can be cooler.
  5. Plan your budget. Switzerland is expensive. Supermarket picnics by the lake are a great, cheap option.
  6. Slow down. This region is best enjoyed without rushing.

What to pack for a summer trip around Lake Geneva

Summer in this part of Switzerland can be warm, so pack light, breathable clothes for the day. Dresses, shorts, linen shirts and comfortable sandals work well for the promenade and lake boats.

Bring a light layer for the evenings, especially if you want to sit by the water for the sunset. A small cardigan or denim jacket is enough.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must for Gruyères. The village is on a hill with a cobbled street, and you’ll want to walk up to the castle.

Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. Swiss tap water is excellent, and there are drinking fountains in many towns.

And leave a little space in your bag for chocolate. You’ll want to bring some home, trust me. More packing tips are in my carry-on packing list.
