Some places you only understand when you stand next to them. The Rhine Falls is one of them. Loud, white, powerful water crashing over the rocks, and spray in the air all around you.
I’ve now been to the Rhine Falls twice. The first time in May 2025 with friends, and again in July 2026 with my mum, when we took the boat out to the rock in the middle of the falls. That boat ride is the highlight, and I’d tell everyone to do it.
Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit, plus my honest tips.
What is the Rhine Falls?
The Rhine Falls (Rheinfall in German) is in the north of Switzerland, near the town of Schaffhausen. It is often called the most powerful waterfall in Europe, because of how much water flows over it.
It’s not the tallest waterfall, but it’s very wide, very loud and very powerful, especially in early summer when the river is full.
Why it’s an easy day trip from Zurich
The Rhine Falls is less than an hour from Zurich by train, which makes it one of the easiest day trips in Switzerland. You can do it in half a day, or combine it with other places on the same day, like we did with my mum on the way to Interlaken.
The boat to the rock: our favourite part
In the middle of the falls, there’s a big rock you can actually climb. Small boats take you across the river and drop you at the rock. Then you climb the steps to a little viewing platform at the top, surrounded by the falling water.
My mum and I did this together, and it was amazing. You’re right in the middle of the roaring water, with spray in the air and rainbows on sunny days. It’s a bit thrilling, and the boat crews do it all day.
Tips for the boat ride:
- Check the boat options. There are different routes: some go to the rock, some go closer to the falls, some cross the river. Pick the rock if you want the full experience.
- Expect a queue in summer. Go early in the day if you can.
- Wear shoes with grip. The steps up the rock can be wet.
- Protect your phone. You will get a bit of spray.
Other things to do at the Rhine Falls
Walk the viewing platforms
On both sides of the river there are paths and platforms that take you very close to the water. The view from below, looking up at the falls, is impressive.
Laufen Castle
On the south side, Laufen Castle sits above the falls. From here, paths and stairs lead down to viewing platforms right next to the water.
Riverside cafés and walks
There are cafés and restaurants around the falls, and nice walks along the river. Perfect for a slow lunch with a view.
A vintage train day out
On our first visit with friends in 2025, part of our day was on a vintage train, with old wooden carriages and windows you can open. It made the day feel extra special. If you see a heritage train ride in the area, it’s worth looking into.
Best time to visit the Rhine Falls
The falls are most powerful in late spring and early summer (around May to July), when the river carries the most water. That’s when we went both times, and it was impressive.
Summer is also the season for the boats. In winter the falls are still beautiful and much quieter, but check which boats and activities are running.
How to get to the Rhine Falls
- By train from Zurich: Trains go to Schaffhausen or to the small station right at the falls (Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall). Check the SBB app for the best route.
- By car: There’s parking near the falls, but trains are easier in summer.
My tips for visiting
- Go early. Fewer people, shorter boat queues.
- Do the boat to the rock. It’s the best part.
- Bring a light jacket. The spray makes it cooler near the water.
- Combine it with another stop. Zurich, Schaffhausen old town, or on to Lucerne or Interlaken.
- Bring your parents. It’s easy, accessible and very impressive. My mum loved it.

Combining the Rhine Falls with other places
The Rhine Falls is easy to combine with other stops, so you can make it part of a bigger day.
Schaffhausen old town: Just a few minutes away, Schaffhausen has a pretty old town with painted houses, bay windows and the round Munot fortress on the hill. Perfect for a walk and lunch after the falls.
Stein am Rhein: A small, very photogenic medieval town further up the river, known for its painted facades.
Zurich: Most people start or end in Zurich. Spend the morning at the falls and the afternoon by the lake or in the old town.
On to the mountains: Like we did with my mum, you can visit the falls in the morning and continue by train towards Interlaken or Lucerne in the afternoon. It makes for a long day, but it’s a great way to start a Switzerland trip.
